Low code platforms and their evolution

Low code or no-code platforms help anyone with an idea create applications without programming.

There are typically 2 types of low code based platforms.


The first type uses a model driven approach where the business logic and components are described in a Meta data format and the pages are generated by the low code engine in real-time during the application runtime. Typically Business Process Management tools (BPM) ,Rapid App Development tools (RAD), workflow tools and prototyping tools work in this model.
The second type uses a code generation approach where the code required for the application is generated from the metadata using the low code engine and the code is then hosted to run the end application developed. Typically developer tools that focus on reducing the workload for developers and mini low code tools to automate tasks for UI generation, etc. work in this model.

The future of software delivery for enterprises will be defined in low code platforms. Low code platforms have multiple use cases such as UI prototyping, workflow mapping for business processes, report generation and dashboard generation for business users from various data sources, etc.

They also have other use cases such as creating portals for vendors, customers and employees to accelerate customer experience and procurement transparency and collaboration.Low code platforms are also used for digitising of legacy business systems by refreshing the UI for existing services and extending the shelf life of those systems.

The adoption of low code among enterprises will be accelerated by a growing tech enabled workforce and the need to quick solutions to be developed rather than going through the whole lifecycle of outsourcing and depending on enterprise IT teams.

Enterprise IT teams usually suffer from a large backlog of apps to be delivered that never see the light of the day due to priorities and budget allocations. Sometimes teams themselves start using off the shelf apps such as SaaS based tools which would again lead to data security and policy violations in the organisation. To avoid this kind of shadow IT, enterprise IT teams can use low code platforms to accelerate digital adoption with predefined and controlled data access.

The future of application delivery for enterprises is definitely exciting as this democratises and completely changes the way applications are developed form enterprises.
